I can walk 10 000 steps...

...and I will walk >10 000 more

....Just to be the girl who's getting up off her arse and walking out the door....

The last few months have been a bit hectic, what with changing jobs, going to Antarctica and moving house (twice), so my exercise has been a bit....ummm...non-existent :(

So I'm starting over again. Much as I would love it to be, I'm not sure whether running will ever really be a permanently sustainable goal for me (although I did manage to run for 14 minutes yesterday) , so at the moment I'm just focussing on mobility.

I've started using a pedometer and doing the 10 000 steps a day program, and I'm absolutely hooked on it! It's so much fun! It's never really sunk in for me before now, but if you have a condition that affects your muscular-skeletal system, the worst thing you can possibly do is to have a bout of intense exercise in the morning followed by limited mobility for the rest of the day, but that's what I've been doing for years! I've always just walked and/or run until my joints were at breaking point in the morning, and then sat at my desk for the rest of the day popping anti-inflammatories and painkillers.

The >10 000 steps thing is fantastic because it reminds me to keep moving all day, so even if I've done 5000 steps by 7 a.m., if my steps haven't changed much between arriving at work and lunchtime I know it's time to be on the move again to keep my joints flexible. Also, remembering that there will be lots more opportunities to add to my activity levels during the day, means that if I'm having a particularly tough morning I can take it a bit easy, knowing that I can catch up later without feeling guilty if I cut the session short.

Watch this space!

I'll be watching!

That's fantastic Y. I've heard nothing but good stuff about the 10000 steps pgm. One of my (otherwise always inactive) friends got into last year, and she loved it.

You know I never thought about that business with hammering yourself in the morning then sitting around all day, I guess its not too good for anyone really.

Anyway, great to have you back in Blogsville. Hopefully catch up soon ... we MUST do another girly lunch/drinks.

Sounds like a very good plan. I would definitely spend most of my time in my chair after doing the exercise for the day.

Gosh Cirque, I hope they weren't Cool Runners who behaved so badly at the Brisbane Marathon. I read about it with horror. I just can't understand it at all.

So generous of you to give your time so that others can take advantage of it & run, but not at all surprised that you are happy to do it.

Thank you for helping others, Cirque!
