My exciting 2007 news

I have some really exciting, positive news to start the year!

I finally drummed up the courage to go the Qld Sports Medicine Centre this week and my consultations there were the most positive I’ve ever had. I’m now in the very capable hands of a lovely and very confidence-inspiring physio (Dolph) who thinks that, with a lot of patience and hard work, there’s hope for me yet!

The two people I met with there stressed that I need a multi-disciplinary focus to address the fact that I have several different medical problems, and neither said anything that sounded remotely like “you shouldn’t be running”, which is what every other single medical person I’ve ever consulted with has said. Dolph is also the first person I’ve come across who doesn’t think it’s either necessary or acceptable for me to be in constant, chronic pain and believes that he has some (non-pharmaceutical) strategies that will help.

Unfortunately, he did say, very firmly, that he doesn’t want me to run until we’ve sorted out some of my problems because I’m compounding my injuries by running the way I am. Apparently, (apart from my torn hamstring, achilles tendonitis and arthritis) not only is my pelvis very badly out of alignment, but my core muscles are crap, my balance is practically non-existent and my posture and technique are so bad that I’m actually pushing myself backwards with each running step. In addition, because of my HMS, the stretches I’m doing are probably doing more harm than good, because I’m stretching my already hyper-extended tendons and ligaments instead of the muscles.

And then the news got even better, because this morning I had a session with Sven (who was actually Svennella this morning) and she said that they’d be really happy to work with the people at QSMC and that if Dolph called them they’d be happy to incorporate whatever he said I needed into my strength program.

So that’s my exciting news for 2007!

I’ll end my post with a shameful confession. The reason I needed to drum up courage to go to the QSMC was because I was embarrassed about not being ‘athletic’ enough to go to a sports medicine centre. I’ve actually been dreading this and putting it off since I was referred to them by my rheumatologist a few months ago, because I felt that they’d think I was wasting their time when they could be looking after ‘real’ athletes. Anyway, even if they do think that way they’re treating me like a real person, so I wish I’d gone a lot sooner.

Wish me luck!!!!!!!!!

That is wonderful, wonderful news. I love it when Dr pain says "oh, I can fix that" ( as long as you do what I say!).

Here's to 2007 and a new approach.

That's really fantastic news Cirque. It makes so much difference when you find someone who has a positive mind set and wants to help rather than tut at our wanting to run. Good luck with all the exercises!

yay! that is great news indeed - and it sounds like a really good centre. I especially like the bits about keeping on running and not having to be in pain. Take care - and see you reallly soon!

Hey, hey, steady on - it's a bit early for having a go at "post of the year". You've left yourself with too high a bar now - how on earth are you going to live up to this one now? ;)

Seriously, SERIOUSLY very good and happy news Y. Wonderful to come across some super positive people to get the year of the cirque off to a flying start :)

Dolph sounds like an absolute one in a million gem. I especially like how he is incredibly positive and firm just the same. I'm certainly wishing you luck as I couldn't think of a person who deserves it more.

As for your 'shameful confession'....I 've always considered you a runner and nothing less - period. I'm sure QSMC would have thought exactly the same.

That's the best news I've heard all year :-) That is sooooo exciting. Now we do have something extra special to celebrate at our CR girls drinkies.

Like Tuggeranonng Don I always think of you as a runner. But I know how you feel. I love it when I have an injury (well, I don't love having the injury) and the physio takes it all so seriously and talks about my 'next race' etc.

GOOD LUCK!!!!

PS Is Dolph big and blonde and handsome and suntanned with a Svedish accent, and does he wear a white singlet and white trackies? Don't tell me if the answer is no, it will ruin the illusion.
