Back on track

OK. Time to stop the celebratory excess - Cirque has brought herself back down to earth with a bump. Woman doth not run on champagne and mud cake alone. But gee, it was fun while it lasted :-)

Yesterday
35 minute bike ride.
I'm not concerned about time or distance at the moment; I just want to learn to keep my balance, steer and maybe take one hand off the bars to swat flies or ring that funky little bell occasionally. Oh, and look over my shoulder for traffic....and use the gears....and do that clever 'standing on the pedals' trick. Until then I'm a danger to society and my cycling is restricted to the bike track across the road from home. I was going OK there too, until I realised I was headed for a wooden guard rail and couldn't slow down. I tried using the right hand brake thingy, because I'm still having problems with my sprained left wrist, but nothing happened. My backup plan (closing my eyes and screaming) didn't seem to be having much effect either. Luckily, by a combination of wobbling the bike about and dragging my feet on the ground, I managed to stop very indelicately about an inch from the fence, with my ego bruised more than anything else. I looked at my bike when I got home and even I can see that the front brake thingy looks a bit...ineffective. Time, I think, to call in the experts and educate myself in the process.

Today
5k run/walk.
It was 5.30 a.m. and already uncomfortably hot and steamy. I was sore and stiff again (nobody but myself to blame), so it was a bit more weighted towards the walk part. To be safe I'll say 2k run, 3k walk. What really hit home this morning was that even a couple of weeks of neglecting some of my AMP (arthritis management plan) seems to have set me back quite a bit in a very short time. However....thanks to the wonderful support from you guys, instead of giving up (as I have in the past), I'm more determined than ever to get back into it, so I came home and reviewed my plan and made some necessary updates.

Please feel free to give me a huge kick up the bum if you think I'm backsliding again!

Great to hear there is somebody else out there who knows as much about cycles and cyling as I do. And I can totally understand the attempt to master all those clever little tricks.

Good on ya, as a fellow non-real-cyclist I know exactly what you went through.

And well done on the walk/run thing too.

Shesh. You mean alcohol and mud cake aren't good fuel?

Now I know where I've been going wrong :-)

Lol Cirque I'm glad I'm in Sydney :-)

Fantastic that you are winning the battle - keep it going mate, but just in case I'll dig out my old army boots;-)

hope you're not after expert mechanical advice from us Cirque - I have no idea how the things work. I just push the pedal and (hopefully) it goes forward.

Sounds like you're just gearing up for a big 2006 :)

I much prefer the champers and bubbly!!!

Though always good to see someone jump on the wagon and do a bit for all of us :)

I got the idea for my program from you Cirque - the slothful indulgence weekend program appealed to me!!!

But you're right - woman cannot run on naps and chocolate mousse cake and Tim tam icecream alone so I did manage a 10km run this afternoon.

The more you cycle the more comfortable you will get with it. In the meantime keep clear of wooden guard rails and the like!!!!
