MDC 4k. I'm a runner!
Well...it's done!
I was very slow, but I'm really relieved and happy that I've finally achieved a goal that's been in the forefront of my mind for the last 18 months.
After having a wonderful few weeks lately, I didn't have a great start to the day. I woke up with a migraine at 3 o'clock and had to take medication that makes me feel really sick (stupid Cirque - I was cross with myself, because that was caused by forgetting to take my other medication when I stayed up the coast the night before) . I tossed and turned for another couple of hours and then finally dropped back into a deep sleep about 15 minutes before the alarm went off. By the time we got to the race I still had the headache, I felt really sick and had a bad case of jelly legs. I was OK for the first 2.5k and only had to have a couple of short walking breaks, but after that the nausea got pretty bad and I felt as though my legs were going to give way under me. I slowed down a fair bit after that and I was really relieved to see the finish line. It was lovely to see the Cirquelets (who had obviously been back for some time) and then Clairie cheering for me. Thanks so much guys! Thanks especially to the Cirquelets for doing this for me for Mothers' Day. It really was the best present I could ask for.
My official time for the 4k was 35:23, but the 4k course is actually 4.4k so I probably did the 4k in about 32. I'm not imagining this, by the way - it's a pretty obvious error! There's a 400 metre gap between the 2k outward marker and the one that tells you there's 2k to go! I thought they would have fixed this after concerns were raised last year, but apparently not.
Anyway, I'm happy enough with the result. This race was never about time, it was about getting through the physical and mental barriers that have been plaguing me for a very long time; the ones that told me I would never be able to run again. I can only get better from here on in!
