Cross-training
Friday
10 mins rowing, 20 mins bike.
Saturday
The upside of cross-training is that it exercises every part of your body.
The downside is that it makes every part of your body hurt. But in a good way!
It's good to have muscles that are sore because they've been overworked, rather than injured, which is lucky because nearly all of mine are at the moment. I'm not sure if my arms and abs are sore from the rowing or the yoga, or if my quads and glutes are sore from the yoga, or maybe the bike.
Today was swimming.
I am a truly hopeless swimmer. I didn't learn to swim until a couple of years ago and I still can't breathe properly and hate putting my head under water. I had to surface a couple of times today to choke and splutter.
However, I was really encouraged by reading in allrounder's blog that in November last year she could only swim 8 x 50m laps with rests in between, but it sounds like she has increased tremendously, so maybe there's hope for me. Of course, the hardest thing is accepting that the improvement won't come unless I work at it. Today I did 8x50m laps swimming, and about 4 laps water running and few more with the kickboard. Then I had my reward of the sauna, steam room and spa.

I only started swimming 2 years ago, as well. I'm not great but it is really good for cross training and I've found that the breathing has helped with my running. So when you are back to running you'll appreciate the swimming!!
i'm by no means anything other than an average swimmer but i've found if you stick at it it'll improve (however marginally!) - still have the odd moment where my timing is out between breathing and putting my face back in the water!
Cirque, I agree with what the others have written - swimming is hard work but consistency is the key - if someone had told me a couple of years ago that I would be able to swim 3.8km in an event I would have thought them completely mad!
So i am not in the water running club now i see....Hrmmpphhh
Ah ha - you'll be ready to attend the ironman after-party to celebrate your successful finish in April 2006
