There's two ways of looking....

.......at the holes in your shoes
You can dig the ventilation, or you can sing the blues.

No - my new shoes don't have holes yet. This is just my way (courtesy of Sanford and Townsend) of reminding myself about silver linings, positive thinking and rainbows coloured in blue.

I finally had my long-delayed consultation with a rheumatologist today. He was a really lovely man who just happened to be a runner. He gave me some good news and some other news.

The good news is that I don't have to stop running. The not so good news - in his words - is that I won't ever be able to run without pain. So basically it's my choice - run with pain, or sit at home and rust and be in pain anyway. Hmmm....tough decision!

I choose................RUNNING! :)

At the moment though, it looks as though the periosteum (the outer covering) of the bones in both legs is in pretty bad shape, so we need to confirm that with an MRI, and then I may need to take some time off to allow it to heal as much as possible and then take it from there.

Anyway - after the consultation I came home and went for a run.

While I was running I was thinking of the little mood descriptor for each day that Omni has on his blog. My mood today was: DEFIANT :)

Rainbows Coloured in Blue:
There's two ways of looking at them holes in your shoes
you can dig the ventilation....or you can sing the blues
seems like all I hear is crying
people think they're dying if they pay a few dues
laugh out - and soon you'll be flying,
and no-one will be flying any higher than you

it's true

rainbows coloured in blue
still the sun keeps shining on through
cos I know my heart's
not so far apart from the truth

Wow, I just loved that post; loved the defiance, loved the 'stick it up negativity' feel about it. Anyone who feels the least bit down and in the blues should read what you have written. Very inspiring. Thank you. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. We could die worrying about it today, or we could be like you, Cirque, and say 'shove it' - I'll take each day as it comes. Beautiful.

As a post-script to my earlier comment, I got into a conversation with a woman today who told me that running was like flying. She couldn't quite articulate why, just that it was.

Well, I said, I find that interesing because on one of my earlier posts I also made the comparison between running and flying. In fact, I used to be a private pilot and have noticed that the 'high' I felt after being in the air was similar to the 'high' I get from my running.

Then I had a re-look at your 'Rainbows coloured at Blue' and lo and behold there was a reference to flying - was that a metaphor for our approach to running??

Interesting! This is pretty heavy stuff, I admit. But the connection between running and flying - perhaps associated with the freedom one feels with both activities - is an intriguing one.

I'm glad to hear you can continue running but I'm sorry to hear that pain will be your companion on these runs. I notice that there was a reference to resting to allow healing and know that's something you have struggled with in the past. I hope you will be able to rest and heal and then to make pain your friend and continue to run.
